Mayor Michelle Wu will flip the switch for the 7,000 lights at the 81st-annual "Make the Common Glow for the Holidays" on Dec. 1. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. near the Visitor's Center at 139 Tremont St.
“I am delighted to be able to celebrate this holiday tradition with our community, friends, and family at Boston Common,” Wu said in a news release. “The City is grateful to our friends in Nova Scotia, who have gifted us beautiful trees every year, and we’re thankful that so many are able to enjoy holiday joy and cheer from this wonderfully lit tree.”
The tree, a 45-foot-tall white spruce, arrived from Christmas Island in Nova Scotia, Canada, on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and the Boston Parks Department is preparing it for its debut.
Nova Scotia has donated a tree to the city for 51 years as a thank-you for Boston's help following an explosion of a munitions ship in Halifax Harbor in 1917. Boston sent a train loaded with emergency supplies and personnel.
Nova Scotia's Premier Tim Houston will join Wu on stage along with Santa and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.
